Fire Activity 7.20.19

Fire Activity 11:00 a.m., 7/20

Grasslands Complex Fire

The Grassland Complex began on July 17th as four individual lightning caused fires: Register Springs, Ute, J and 13, and M and 8 fires. Initial attack resources from Baca County, adjoining Colorado Counties, counties in both Oklahoma and New Mexico, as well as local US Forest Service resources all quickly joined forces containing two fires, the Ute and J and 13 fires, and beginning suppression efforts on the remaining fires.  The Register Spring and M and 8 fires eventually burned together and are currently being managed as a single fire.  All firefighting resources on the Grassland Complex are focusing their efforts to suppress this last remaining fire, which is nearly 1600 acres.

County, State and Federal resources on the Grassland Complex include 91 firefighters to include, 1 Air Attack Aircraft, 1 Hotshot Crew, 12 Engines, 2 County Water Tenders, 2 County Graders, 1 Ambulance, and various personnel from Baca County Emergency Operations enter.

As of 8:00 a.m. on July 19, a Type 3 Incident Management Team lead by Incident Commander Joe Williams has assumed control of the Grassland Complex.

Yesterday the fire did not move much and crews were able to put in direct fire line bringing containment to 30 percent. Today crews will continue their direct line construction taking advantage of moderating fire conditions.
